About Komal Rastogi
Since my childhood, I have been aware of how suboptimal nutrition afflicts our health. My grandmother succumbed to stroke due to brain hemorrhage when I was 9 years old. She also had diabetes-related kidney failure. My mother was diagnosed with Type2 Diabetes when she was still in her 30s. My father suffered two heart attacks, one in his late 40s and the other in his early 50s. I myself was diagnosed with prediabetes in my mid-30s.
Those of us who have experienced or seen loved ones suffer from such illnesses know the insecurity that accompanies them. Most prominent is the domineering fear accompanying the belief that none of it is in our hands -- the belief that we can listen to our doctors and take the medications they prescribe, but nothing more.
I wanted to draw away from this sense of helplessness, this dependence on medication, and approach the issue through the lens of my own lifestyle, to empower myself by knowing how to prevent the advent of these illnesses in our lives and the lives of loved ones. This spurred me to try and find a way to treat these conditions -- not via esoterically named tablets and pills, but through among the most quintessential facets of our lives -- our plates.
I first found a beacon to guide me in Dr. Neal Barnard’s research-based program "Reversing Diabetes," which aired on PBS in 2010. There, I discovered that the nutrition in our diet was the keystone to our health in so many incredible ways. What sat on the shelves of our fridges and pantries could define whether we would be at the mercy of our genes or in control of our health.
Since then, I have continued to avidly research and gain invaluable knowledge along my journey. Starting with my own family’s health, I realized that what comes through our kitchen can have a truly profound effect on the health of the family. Now, working as a whole food plant-based nutritionist since 2015, I have had the privilege of sharing this wealth of information with others. I am passionate about guiding others in the practices and value of nutrition in reclaiming their health.
